Erika Lust brought her story to the page and to the stage. The writer, director and producer launched her new memoir, Lust: Pleasure, Performance, Power, on Tuesday night at Dynasty Typewriter inside the Hayworth Theatre in Los Angeles, in an event presented by Los Feliz bookseller Skylight Books.

The evening opened with a conversation between Lust and VICE staff writer Gigi Fong, who covers sex and wellness. Lust explained that the book pulls back the curtain on how her films are made, including the contracts, negotiations and clear boundaries agreed on with performers before filming. She said she hopes readers come away understanding that adult film is performance and fantasy, made within an industry that has guidelines.

Lust also opened up about growing up in Sweden, where she had access to sex education, and about moving to Barcelona, the city she said changed her life. She spoke proudly about parenting her two kids, and described how her company has taken down films at performers’ request when their circumstances changed.

Fong told AVN she especially appreciated the book’s “Good Pornographer” chapter, which explores Lust’s experiences with Hollywood and her own journey as an ethical feminist filmmaker.

After the talk, fans lined up down an aisle for signed copies. Lust told AVN it felt “amazing to be back here in Los Angeles,” and singled out Nina Hartley, who was in the audience, as one of her all-time favorite performers. Other industry names spotted included Casey Calvert, Bree Mills, Lilly Bell, Nicole Vaunt and Leo Vice.
